Machine Wired for Sound

Machine Wired For Sound

By David Smith August 7, 2009

The Sergeant-Major: a machine wired for sound

As he belches out the commands on the Parade Ground.

The voice full of enthusiasm:

The Man: His control; the drill is a breeze.

The slap of the foot like one hit in time;

The Sergeant-Major keeps His regiment in line.

Like soldiers on a shelf; to react to His next breath;

Think of the joy; if I could be deaf.

To be yelled at and hollered; hoarded like cattle.

The Sergeant-Major’s voice as an unpleasant rattle;

Surrendering control to the sound of His voice;

I volunteered.

That was my second choice.
