Married to the Road

Married to the Road

By David Smith May 21, 2011

Married to the road, up hills and down

Through valleys and mountains and far sides of town,

The roar of the engine, wind on the face

Married to the road, the elements we face;

Not all glamour, through pot holes and mud

Oil changes and tires, discouragement and crud

And all to show; the odometer, every mile

 To drive down the highway and forget to smile

The worries are few and the loneliness reeks

Longing for a family, a relationship is bleak

The clatter of the engine, the tac on high;

Married to the road, the distance, I cry.
