Out of Prison after 44 years

The Forty-four Year Gap of Life: What a shock

By David Smith June 1, 2016

Inspired by Otis Johnson

Shut your eyes, take a walk, look around, and see how far we’ve come

How things look different from the few steps we’ve done

Now, think of prison and being behind bars

For forty-four years, then, look up at the stars

Things are different, from the late 60’s, it was

Now, Neon lights and cell phones and how cities buzz

A joyous, sadness, to be out with all the time past

No family, no parents, only loneliness, to last

Evident in the grocery store with new products on display

And out from behind bars, our freedom in disarray

Being a kid, to visualize movement, was new

Shut eyes, then open, how the present, becomes true

And being out of prison, a gap for forty-four years

And to have our freedom, how it comes with many fears

Now think of human beings locked away in time

O the value of freedom, now well past their prime

Now shut your eyes, look around, and see how far we’ve come

How things look different from when we were young
