Journey of Wellness

Journey of Wellness

September 23, 2018

A journey of wellness, four months on the go

Started with a hernia, now a greater show

A month and a half in ICU,

Think of the agony, the family went through

Four months away from home

Mixed emotion set the tone

Approaching the end of the track

Some capabilities we lack

A journey of wellness, guidelines along the way

Doctors and nurses, what the health team had to say

What an experience, where day surgery took place

Four months on the calendar, all had to face

A journey of wellness, the memories cut deep

What an experience, to Shaver a feat

That is the journey, four months in the making

The care is phenomenal, the time that was taken

Hospital triggers memories of Military Basic Training

Hospital triggers memories of Military Basic Training

By David Smith August 11, 2018

A hospital room freshly painted and all

A highly waxed shine, a mirror floor in awe

Think of Basic Training and a highly waxed shine

Riding that floor polisher every time

The word immaculate falls in place

Spit and polish we had to face

As the floor reflected the light from outside

Basic Training, nowhere to hide

Yelled and screamed at for a razor sharp crease

Training was rough, the discipline they teach

And that floor next door to me

An excellent shine so beautifully

The floor appears wet, but that is the shine

Memories from life, from past experiences I find

Patient Hospital Care

Patient Hospital Care

by David Smith August 19, 2018

The man in the wheelchair dependent with care

All tech equipment to keep from despair

And think of the nurses who sail down the hall

With running shoes and service

To answer a call

We all have place

And roles do change

And similar challenges are close to the same

All striving for that cut above

To do our best in a sea of love

Duty and service, and wounded we may be

It’s all in a mindset

For our lives to see

We all are striving to do our best

That’s our goal for complete happiness

Nice Bum

Nice Bum

By David Smith September 7, 2018

Nice bum where are you from

Standing in front of the wheelchair

With a urinal at my thumb

The privacy in a hospital

And doors that do not shut

All is open for business as modesty is in a rut

So we see the patients with flaps held to their backs

Everything exposed as we walk and do our laps

More than body parts in a hospital get exposed

It’s the doors and curtains

That sometime gets disclosed

Nice bum

Where are you from

What a sexy comment,

As I appeared so dumb

More real than Non fiction

More real than Non-fiction

By David Smith August 3, 2018

More real than non fiction

Being in a coma for nineteen days

Think of the allusions and thought that sway

The reality of hallucinations, greater than life

The thoughts of the mind

Through tribulation and strife

To verify the evidence, after the fact

Tears come to mind because reality is off track

O to see hallucinations so crisp and clear

Vivid imagery, to let reason appear

Belief system shattered

Where imagination becomes real

Truth from fiction, the uncertainty to feel

Being in a coma for nineteen days

It’s the imagination, the dreams, which play

Weighing the evidence, reality sets in

Verifying truth, is difficult to begin

Happenings at Hotel Dieu Shaver

Happenings at Hotel Dieu Shaver

The Rehab Centre, the pain where it lies

Stretching and bending and keeping knees high

Love the flexibility, and mild pleasure that I’m in

A sign of advancement, to let muscle tone begin

That’s the excitement, laps along the hall

And lifting weights, the best therapy of all

Hotel Dieu Shaver, we stay for a time

The gym is amazing, like clockwork in rhyme

Porters give us a spin in wheelchairs, no less

And down to business, as instructors do their best

To relearn a skill; to walk and climb stairs

O what encouragement to do it with flair

Thanks be to Shaver, where rehab is grand

To challenge the body, and support all to stand
